3G iPhone in Saigon

My former student, Wendy, showed me her brand new white 3G iPhone last Friday.  I was surprised, it was very nice.  I hate to say it, the design is much better than the original iPhone.

Your ‘OLD’ iPhones could increase in value inside Vietnam, thanks to Apple

Thank you Apple!!! :-)   Because of your new requirements that buyers must unlock their iPhones at the ATT Store or your Apple Stores, it will be more difficult to bring the new iPhones to Vietnam.  Furthermore, rumors suggest that each new iPhone could cost up to $1000 US due to supply and demand bringing the cost out of reach for many average mobile users.  That’s how business is down in Vietnam.

In short, you have, thankfully, increased the value of my 4 Gig iPhone barely 9 months old.  About a month ago, I may have been able to sell it for just $200 US.  Now some of my students and friends say that in the upcoming months, I should be able to sell it for nearly $400-500 US.  There will be a flood of ‘USED’ iPhones making their way from the US and France to Vietnam.

Thank you again Apple :-)

HTC Touch Cruise Wows – Can’t wait for Android

Okay, I tried to make my first blog entry from my HTC Touch Cruise pda tonight at the Nice Cafe in District 1.  Well, I failed thanks to the horrible Windows Mobile 6 operating system.  Ever since I bought my HTC Touch Cruise a couple months ago, I have not been happy.  It is so slow, I have to reboot it once every couple of days.  When I was trying to post the entry from Nice Cafe today, my phone froze.  It has been a long time since I had anything like this happen to me.

I am not going to switch phones though.  I actually like the HTC Touch Cruise itself.  There is an active community porting Android to this phone as we speak.  I will wait a couple months to make sure it is more stable.  Once Android is fully functioning on the Touch Cruise with the GPS working, I can see myself using this phone for a couple of years.  For me, the interface is much nicer than the iPhone.

In the meantime, I plan to test Android on my Nokia N800 internet tablet.  Android runs as a virtual machine so it will not do any harm to my N800, I hope :-)

I still got my iPhone, decided I did not really want to part with it just yet.  My Motorola e6 Rokr Linux phone is still being used.  I can never part with this phone either :-)

Make free mobile calls with fring

fring - free mobile calls

I just downloaded this nice application on my HTC Touch Cruise.  Once installed, you can make free mobile calls to anyone who has this application installed on their mobile phones.  It connects with popular IMs such as Skype, Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger, Twitter, etc.  I just chatted with my friend in Denmark with fring but I have not tried to make a call to his computer.

This program seems to be able to run on my mobile platforms including the iPhone (still in beta).

Download it, get online and lets test this out.

Another Techy Saigon Blogger

Just want to introduce you all to another Saigon Blogger, Lawrence Sinclair. Like Adam (Saigon Files), Lawrence is a Ruby on Rails developer. There seems to be at least 5 Ruby on Rails developers in Vietnam now. He also uses Linux :-)

Lets welcome Lawrence to the Saigon Blogger community.
