Thank you Apple!!! Because of your new requirements that buyers must unlock their iPhones at the ATT Store or your Apple Stores, it will be more difficult to bring the new iPhones to Vietnam. Furthermore, rumors suggest that each new iPhone could cost up to $1000 US due to supply and demand bringing the cost out of reach for many average mobile users. That’s how business is down in Vietnam.

In short, you have, thankfully, increased the value of my 4 Gig iPhone barely 9 months old. About a month ago, I may have been able to sell it for just $200 US. Now some of my students and friends say that in the upcoming months, I should be able to sell it for nearly $400-500 US. There will be a flood of ‘USED’ iPhones making their way from the US and France to Vietnam.

Thank you again Apple

Okay, I tried to make my first blog entry from my HTC Touch Cruise pda tonight at the Nice Cafe in District 1. Well, I failed thanks to the horrible Windows Mobile 6 operating system. Ever since I bought my HTC Touch Cruise a couple months ago, I have not been happy. It is so slow, I have to reboot it once every couple of days. When I was trying to post the entry from Nice Cafe today, my phone froze. It has been a long time since I had anything like this happen to me.

I am not going to switch phones though. I actually like the HTC Touch Cruise itself. There is an active community porting Android to this phone as we speak. I will wait a couple months to make sure it is more stable. Once Android is fully functioning on the Touch Cruise with the GPS working, I can see myself using this phone for a couple of years. For me, the interface is much nicer than the iPhone.

In the meantime, I plan to test Android on my Nokia N800 internet tablet. Android runs as a virtual machine so it will not do any harm to my N800, I hope

I still got my iPhone, decided I did not really want to part with it just yet. My Motorola e6 Rokr Linux phone is still being used. I can never part with this phone either

I used jailbreakme.com to unlock another iPhone here in Vietnam thanks with the help of the IT guy at ViGroup last night (Here is a nice guide to jailbreak the iPhone with firmware 1.1.1 which is supposed to work with firmware 1.1.2 as well -> JailBreak iPhone the easy way).

My friend would not let me unlock his iPhone until we found a way to put the Vietnamese fonts on his iPhone so he can view Vietnamese language websites. No problem, his IT guy found a webpage that explained how to install Vietnamese fonts on the iPhone.

In Installer, select the ‘Sources’ icon, press ‘Edit’, and then press ‘Add’

After the ‘Add Source’ window pops up, add this source: iphone.billydragon.net and press ‘OK’

It should now be refreshing the sources

Select the ‘Install’ icon and then scroll to the bottom until you see ‘Vietnamese’

Select either VietFonts FW.1.0.2 or VietFontsFW.1.1.1 depending on which firmware you have and hit ‘Install’

Presto, you should be able to view Vietnamese language websites now

VietFonts FW.1.1.2 does not seem available yet but it should be in a couple of weeks. Be sure to install the English-Vietnamese dictionary as well.

As I always told my students, there is no need to pay $30-100 to get your iPhone unlocked in Vietnam if you can do it for free online in under 5 minutes. Many argued that the mobile phone shops would add Vietnamese font support for an extra fee that they would not be able to do on their own. Nope, they can do it on their own

One of my early complaints about the iPhone was that I could not access it with my Sabayon Linux laptop. I was afraid that I would need to install iTunes inside of VMWare Server which I really did not want to do. Well, thanks to SSH and the KDE Konqueror, I am able to access my iPhone directly. Finally, I found a way to access all of my pictures inside the iPhone.

I will add screen shots sometime this week.

About 4 hours later, I was at the American International School giving my students a quiz in their Computer Science class. One of my quiz questions asked who created Linux. As they were taking the quiz, I noticed Tux at back of the room. A couple students just needed to turn their heads to see the answer
