I am currently reviewing the various grid system theme frameworks available for Drupal. I like Brueprint myself. It reminds me of the Genesis theme framework for WordPress.

Well, it is the end of my workday at Horizon but thanks to a small rainstorm, I may get wet going home today. Not a problem, I got myself a nice Horizon rain poncho and a Horizon windbreaker to keep me nice and dry. Arghh, I just heard some thunder. I hope the roads are not flooded in front of The Manor.

It has been an interesting week. I spent most of it reviewing school information systems and learning managements for my school. We got two good candidates that we will choose as our vendors. I had no idea that there were a lot of good educational software out there whether open source or propriety. Expect some good posts in the future on what software we selected. No, it will not necessarily be open source. I found that some propriety LMSs can beat out Moodle, the popular open source equivalent, easily.

I had some good meetings with my Expat and Vietnamese friends as well. Mel and I met for a burger at Crazy Buffalo. I met other Vietnamese friends, students, ex-colleagues as well this week. Got another meeting tonight with another Vietnamese friend to close a busy week.

Still, though it it TGIF here in Saigon, for most of us, we still have another half or full day to work tomorrow. I enjoy Saturdays myself. I can get caught up on work. I have a paper due for a book this weekend so tomorrow I will go over the draft one more time. No break for me this weekend…

Anyway, that’s it for today. Sorry for the lack of pictures, I want to change the theme and framework for my blog to make it more interesting.

Have a good weekend everyone!!!

Activists worry that new software mandated for Hanoi ISPs could operate like China’s Green Dam
By Robert McMillan, IDG News Service
June 04, 2010 08:22 PM ET

Human rights activists are worried that new software mandated by Vietnamese authorities may lead to an Internet clampdown in the country’s largest city.

In April, local officials issued new regulations covering Internet cafes and service providers in Hanoi, ostensibly designed to crack down on hacking and other service abuses. Buried in the regulations is a mandate that service providers must add special software to their domain servers, used to authenticate systems on the network.

5 ways to beat the Great Firewall of China

Under the new rules, domain servers must install a copy of the “Internet Service Retailers Management Software,” the regulations state.

Nobody quite knows what the software is, but activists in the U.S. worry that it may be used to clamp down on Internet usage in a country that has seen more and more grassroots information-sharing on social networks over the past year.

“There are now 25 million Vietnamese online and the government is afraid that the people have a venue that is relatively free of censorship where they can exchange their views,” said Duy Hoang, a spokesman with Viet Tan, a pro-democracy political party that is critical of the Vietnamese government. “The government doesn’t want independent sources of information,” he said.

“This recent move by the Hanoi authorities is definitely an obstacle toward Vietnamese people using the Internet,” Hoang added. He worries that the government-mandated software will be similar to China’s Green Dam censorware.

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS will be released today. Chris Dollmont gave me a demonstration on his Thinkpad last weekend and I was very impressed. It is one of the most talked about releases for Ubuntu that WILL change how people view and use Linux.

Two years ago, Mark Shuttleworth, the main promoter of Ubuntu and the Linux community, challenged developers to make Linux much more visually appealing and exciting than the Apple Macbooks. Well, I think they did it and now Ubuntu, yes I am using just Ubuntu instead of the full Ubuntu Linux, has a chance to bring a larger group of users to the Linux desktop.

For me here in Vietnam, I have introduced Ubuntu and Linux Mint to my students with success. At the school I am forming, I will start offering Ubuntu Linux courses for high schools students and adults. This release is perfect timing for me to offer my courses. Macbooks are expensive for the average Vietnamese here in Saigon but Ubuntu can run on any laptop, old or new. Who knows, you may see an increase of Thinkpads and Dell laptops which Ubuntu supports very well.

I feel this will be a great time for Linux thanks to the efforts of Shuttleworth and and the open source developers.

I can’t wait to download the latest release of Ubuntu tonight…

Today the new website for Saigon Linux Group (SLG) Vscapeone was launched. The new website still runs on WordPress and uses the new Genesis Theme Framework and Enterprise Child Theme by StudioPress. StudioPress offers some great premium themes for websites that focus on business, consulting, etc. I am currently using three of them for 4 WordPress projects I am working on at the moment.

The launch of the new WordPress site is a milestone for SLG Vscapeone after the difficulties we faced since last October. Most of you are aware that my company was a victim of embezzlement and fraud. This forced me to refer several of my clients to other companies while I unsuccessfully dealt with my Vietnamese business partner. Revenue was lost but when compared to many other companies in Vietnam set up jointly with Vietnamese and Expats, I was very, very lucky.

SLG Vscapeone was left idle for about 6 months trying to resolve the problems but with the support of my team and past clients, we decided to give Saigon Linux Group (SLG) Vscapeone a second life about three weeks ago. During this short time, we received roughly 4 requests for services from companies in and outside of Vietnam. So now we are moving ahead.

I got a great team of consultants. Just take a short look at their profiles at this URl: http://www.saigonlinux.com/us/ We all have a strong background in implementing open source technologies and a passion for Linux.

This is turning out to be an exciting time for us in the next phase of the Saigon Linux Group (SLG) Vscapeone.

Visit our website: http://www.saigonlinux.com

My piece is at the 7 minute mark after the interview with Professor Son. Oh, the entire clip is in Vietnamese…

Ms. Quynh Ngoc from VTV visited my Linux lab at the American International School today through a referral by An Nguyen of SaigonLUG. Though we knew about it for a couple days, we only received permission from the school at the last minute. My students were not prepared but since this was a normal lab day, I was not worried.

This is actually my third academic year using Linux and open source software at AIS. For their ICT projects, the majority of my students are using either Synfig Studio, Blender and/or GIMP this quarter on either Ubuntu Linux or Windows platforms. I am impressed at how fast they transitioned to Linux and open source software. My 10th, 11th, and 12th graders this year are definitely my brightest open source users to date. I will blog about some of their projects in late January, 2010.

The visit by VTV was went okay. They just visited one class and got the footage they needed. Long, my ICT student, and I were interviewed outside the classroom. That was a little nervous for a guy who hates cameras.

I am glad that Vietnam is taking a stronger look into open source now. I also thank AIS for supporting open source and Linux from the first day I started there back in 2006. Our students will be some of the leading IT experts in the future, in my opinion…
