Fedora (10) ca0106 Audigy SE sound card working with 5.1

Today I installed Fedora 10 on my desktop. I need to spend some months working with Fedora to prepare for my Red Hat Certified Engineer exam which I will hopefully take this summer.

I immediately had sound problems.  Luckily, I was able to refer to my old posting from one year ago for the fix.  This is just an edited version of that post.

My desktop is currently using the Creative Audigy SE sound card (ca0106) which can be very un-Linux friendly.  As I mentioned 9 months ago, I was able to get sound from my front 3 speakers but I wanted all 5 speakers to work as well (5.1).

With Arch Linux and Gentoo Linux, I was able to get surround sound on all five speakers with the following .asoundrc file and saved it to my /home directory:

pcm.!dmix {
type plug
slave {
pcm surround51
channels 6
}
}
pcm.!default {
type plug
slave.pcm “dmix”
slave.channels 6
route_policy duplicate
}

With Fedora, similarly to Ubuntu, I was not getting surround sound with the above file.

I remembered that I needed to add the following to /etc/pulse/default.pa:

load-module module-alsa-sink device=”surround51″ channels=6 sink_name=sur51

Still, no surround sound.  Then I reread my old post and realized that I needed to add the entire contents of .asoundrc to /etc/asound.conf as well to make the settings system wide.

I rebooted and got all 5 speakers to work.  Thank God for old posts :-)

Fedora Core 9 Installed

I successfully installed Fedora Core 9 on my Thinkpad T60.  Everything seems to be working out of the box.  I just need to the volume buttons to work.

The Gnome 2.22 desktop environment is nice and easy to configure.  Ubuntu Herod Hardy gave a little more eye candy and had Compiz Fusion working with their installation.  For me, those are minor details since I really just want a plain and simple desktop.

Yum is great.  I had to install the fastestmirror application to find the closest mirrors for me during the downloads.  This will come in handy since the bandwidth seems to be missing for most of the last two weeks here in Vietnam.

I had problems installing Skype since I could not retrieve the pgp key.  I waited about 30 minutes and was able to retrieve it.  Skype is now working.

This weekend I will install both Joomla and Plone.  Plone is my favorite CMS know but everyone seems to be using Joomla.

Lets see how long I keep using FC9.  So far, so good.

Fedora Core 9 Downloaded :-)

I woke up this morning and found that Fedora Core 9 finished downloading through ktorrent. The bandwidth was quite high last night so the remaining 2 gigs downloaded in about 6 hours.

If anyone needs an iso copy of FC9 ~x86, just let me know. If you want a dvd copy, bring a couple dvds and we can meet for coffee.

Fedora Core 9 Released!!!

Fedora Core 9 - Vietnam

A big day for the Red Hat Fedora Core Community. Fedora Core 9 was just released. I am currently downloading it through bittorrent. Right now there does not seem to be a lot of torrents here in Asia but I suspect by morning, there will be many more.

If anyone in Saigon wants a copy of FC9. just let me know. I will burn a DVD for you.

I started my Linux days with Red Hat 7.3. At the time it was not interesting but when I was testing CentOS early this year, I found that I really liked Red Hat again. I plan to run FC9 on my Thinkpad T60 with Gnome 2.22, considered one of the better desktop environments in the open source community right now (Sorry KDE but I realy hate KDE4).
