Rumors, rumors, rumors. Amazing how they fly around so fast. I have not updated much since I received my new Nokia N900 from the US. I have actually been spending some time at the Horizon International Bilingual School (HIBS) run by my Turkish friends in An Phu (District 2). Yesterday I attended a nice program put together for some Turkish guests. It was quite interesting and I enjoyed the doner kebab we had for dinner.

Hard Rock Cafe Ho Chi Minh City – Grand Opening Party

Last Friday was the official Grand Opening Party at the Hard Rock Cafe Ho Chi Minh City. Last month was the soft opening.

Leon Sikes, the Managing Partner at MNG Joint Venture Partnership, and I were given invites by the Viet Thai International Joint Stock Company, or VTI for short. For those of you that do not know, VTI is the owner of Highlands Coffee, and the master investor for Hard Rock Cafe HCM. MNG, which focuses on global commerce and trade, intends to distribute Highland products in Turkey with hopes in expanding to the Central Eurasian region.

Since Leon and I did not have our invitation passes, Derick from VTI walked us in. Once inside, I forgot I was even in Vietnam. They did an amazing job with the interior of this Hard Rock Cafe. Since it was the grand opening, the drinks and appetizers were free.

Hard Rock Cafe HCM was a bit packed since there were actually two parties, the 6 PM and the 9 PM (for VIPs). At 9 PM, the early group just stayed, I would not have left either. Run-DMC was the star of the grand opening. If you did not get an invite, you really missed a great party.

Hard Rock Cafe HCM is definitely the place to go to hang out, have a drink and listen to good much in Saigon. Actually, I would say it beats all the other clubs in Saigon now.

The 10 Conditions of Love (Rabiya Kadeer)

Here is a documentary that I do not see making it’s way to Vietnam. Need to find a way to get a copy back in the US.

The 10 Conditions of Love looks at the life and struggle of Uyghur activist Rabiya Kadeer. I first learned about Rabiya Kadeer when I was a graduate student at Indiana University. At the time, I learned about her plight and bought some Uyghur Human Rights buttons from the Uyghur Human Rights Coalition. Rabiya Kadeer was in prison at that time but she was later released and exiled in the US.

It is amazing that the world knows so much about the Tibetans but very little about the Uyghurs. As you can tell, this documentary has been very controversial to the Chinese government. They unsuccessfully tried to convince the Taiwanese from showing the film next month.

IT class update, more Vietnamese Linux users :-)

Well, I just completed week 3 at the American International School here in Saigon, Vietnam. I signed a one year contract to teach 2 ICT classes part-time for about 40 high school students ranging from the 9th – 12th grades. This most likely will be my last year teaching IT at this school do to my limited amount of time I have outside of my company.

This year my curriculum and syllabus were prepared for me before the school year started. As usual, I decided to add an open source component to my curriculum. My students were very receptive and by the end of week 3, the majority of my students already installed Ubuntu Linux on their laptops or netbooks. Ubuntu has come a long ways since my first Vietnamese student installed Ubuntu nearly two years ago. I only had to take about 4 netbooks home the last week to get them running properly, mostly just wifi issues. One of my brightest student was able to get the hda sound card to work after some tweaking. He also had the coolest laptop running Compiz. Yes, I allowed the Mac users to keep running their Macbooks in class

For the individual IT projects, I decided to make it interesting for most of my students. My students had to either design an airplane with X-Plane’s Planemaker, design their future Saigon house with QCad, or edit music with Audacity. For the first quarter, I want them to learn how to use their chosen software (over half decided to use QCad which surprised me). The goal by the end of the year is to match the Audacity students with the Planemaker and QCad students. I want all the student groups to create a movie of their QCad or Planemaker projects. This seems quite exciting from an IT teacher’s point of view.

For me, one of the goal of these IT projects is to get my students to teach themselves how to learn the new software. You will be amazed at how fast Vietnamese IT students can learn new software. I also found them some really nice YouTube tutorials as well that will help them thanks to the help of my students (See below).

I am looking forward to my final year with my IT students. Hopefully by the end of the year, I will post some good movies of my student’s IT projects.

Unhealthy Rhino at the Dai Nam Safari Park

This is just one of those things where you just have to be there. In the wild, this rhino should be charging me. Here, it seems to want my help though most likely, it wanted some food. The other rhino would not let it eat.

This rhino had a huge cut near it’s right eye with flies flying around it. I wish there was a way to rescue or protect these animals at the Dai Nam Safari Park.

Eternal Home Kazakhstan (Documentary)

Just watched an interesting one hour video on Kazakhstan. Made me a bit homesick for the country. This independent documentary reminds me so much of the life in Kazakhstan. I was surprised to see not much has changed in the 7 years since I left the country (the film was produced in 2006).
