Osh Update

The violence in Osh and Jalal Abad seems to be waning. Many Uzbek refugees are still in Uzbekistan, it is hard to say if they will return. Several sources are suggesting that ousted President Bakiyev and his son were behind these events. Eyewitnesses in Osh stated they saw Tajik masked men shooting at both the Kyrgyz and Uzbek. Interpol arrested President Bakiyev’s son, Maksim, in the UK at the request of the Kyrgyzstan government who is alleged to have funded these Tajik “mercenaries”.

Now, Kyrgyzstan will need international help in bringing aid to Osh and Jalal Abad and to the areas in Uzbekistan where the refugees reside. The international community still seems to be failing in helping southern Kyrgyzstan.

The video below was taken last weekend. You can see the Uzbekistan Army helping the Uzbek refugees cross into Uzbekistan. It is a bit chaotic. Latest estimates suggest that over 100,000 Uzbeks crossed into Uzbekistan. Osh itself has an official population of 300,000 (450,000 unofficially).

Meet Satan

Nearly two weeks ago, I took my vet, Y, to visit Beyoz, a big white cat that belongs to the General Director of the Horizon International Bilingual School. The GD was on a trip to Turkey and he wanted me to bring the vet to take a look his cat’s skin problem.

Well, what should have been an easy examination turned out to be very difficult. This was one tough cat as you will soon see in the video below. In the end, we called the cat, Satan.

Rumors, rumors, rumors. Amazing how they fly around so fast. I have not updated much since I received my new Nokia N900 from the US. I have actually been spending some time at the Horizon International Bilingual School (HIBS) run by my Turkish friends in An Phu (District 2). Yesterday I attended a nice program put together for some Turkish guests. It was quite interesting and I enjoyed the doner kebab we had for dinner.

Hard Rock Cafe Ho Chi Minh City – Grand Opening Party

Last Friday was the official Grand Opening Party at the Hard Rock Cafe Ho Chi Minh City. Last month was the soft opening.

Leon Sikes, the Managing Partner at MNG Joint Venture Partnership, and I were given invites by the Viet Thai International Joint Stock Company, or VTI for short. For those of you that do not know, VTI is the owner of Highlands Coffee, and the master investor for Hard Rock Cafe HCM. MNG, which focuses on global commerce and trade, intends to distribute Highland products in Turkey with hopes in expanding to the Central Eurasian region.

Since Leon and I did not have our invitation passes, Derick from VTI walked us in. Once inside, I forgot I was even in Vietnam. They did an amazing job with the interior of this Hard Rock Cafe. Since it was the grand opening, the drinks and appetizers were free.

Hard Rock Cafe HCM was a bit packed since there were actually two parties, the 6 PM and the 9 PM (for VIPs). At 9 PM, the early group just stayed, I would not have left either. Run-DMC was the star of the grand opening. If you did not get an invite, you really missed a great party.

Hard Rock Cafe HCM is definitely the place to go to hang out, have a drink and listen to good much in Saigon. Actually, I would say it beats all the other clubs in Saigon now.
